Bellhouse’s Magpie (Maggie)

In February of 2019, we purchased our first herdsire: Bellhouse’s Rigel *B, as a newborn buckling. Later that year, in July, we were offered the opportunity to purchase his dam, Echo Hills’ Sparrow *P. We jumped at the chance! But, we were delayed by family events in picking her up.

Sparrow came into heat early, and got out of her pen just days before we were scheduled to pick her up. Goat Trails’ Texas Blue broke through electric fencing to be with her. (So romantic!) Tex is blue eyed and moon spotted, and Sparrow had just easily earned her milk star.

Sparrow made the trip to Storybook Farm shortly after her romantic interlude, and delivered, right on Day 150 (December 9), three adorable doelings; Maggie is one of these.

She is beautifully marked, with LONG ears and great breed character. She is very dairy: both deep and long through her barrel, with a great brisket as well. Like her mom, her topline is superb.

Maggie grew up super friendly, and definitely the boldest of the three girls in her litter. Once we began to feed her grain, a month before her first freshening, she let us know when meal time was, and who should be first in line!

The picture at the left captures her sassy spirit; she’s about three months old here.

She is F7 (Purebred) and registered with MDGA.

We bred her to Green Gables E Asher *B in the fall of 2020, and she freshened with a single buckling, named Felix. See a picture gallery of Maggie and Felix, one week old, below.

In 2021, we bred Maggie to Storybook’s Prince Valiant. She freshened with adorable twins, who had ears for miles, solid builds, and sweet faces. We named them Sir Robin and Jenny Wren (retained). See them below.

Maggie’s Udder

Maggie’s Dam

Echo Hills Sparrow *P is pure joy all the way around. She has a terrific topline and highly productive udder, with wonderfully placed teats that have open orifices. If there was anything to improve on Sparrow, it would be to tighten and lift her udder, but that’s being really picky. (If you want to read more about Sparrow, and see udder pictures, click on her name above.)

Maggie is the right one in this picture of Sparrow’s triplet doelings.

Maggie’s Sire

Goat Trails Texas Blue is related to our Texas Pete. He is blue eyed and moonspotted, neither of which traits he passed on to Maggie.

Blue has thrown beautiful kids for years, and has a rich milk heritage, which — given Maggie’s conformation — we’re confident that she inherited in spades.

If you want to learn more about Blue, visit Rigel’s page. Tex is his sire as well.

Maggie’s Kids

2021

Maggie’s first freshening bred to Green Gables E Asher *B produced a single buckling, whom we named Felix.

2022

For Maggie’s second freshening, she was bred to Storybook’s Prince Valiant. She produced gorgeous twins: Storybook’s Sir Robin and Storybook’s Jenny Wren (retained).
